Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound-Complex Sentences

1. CLAUSE

• Main Clause (Independent Clause): Memiliki subjek dan predikat; dapat berdiri sendiri.

  • Contoh: Houston plays baseball.

• Subordinate Clause (Dependent Clause): Memiliki subjek dan predikat tetapi tidak dapat berdiri sendiri.

  • Contoh: Because we won the game.

2. SUBJECT & PREDICATE

• Subject: Pelaku dalam kalimat.

  • Simple Subject: hanya subjeknya saja. Contoh: Students.

  • Compound Subject: lebih dari satu subjek. Contoh: Susie and Joan.

• Predicate: bagian kalimat yang menyatakan aksi.

  • Simple Predicate: kata kerja tunggal. Contoh: cheered.

  • Compound Predicate: dua atau lebih aksi. Contoh: rode his bike and skated.

3. SIMPLE SENTENCE

• Kalimat yang terdiri dari:

  • Satu subjek, satu predikat, dan mengungkapkan ide lengkap.

• Contoh:

  • She cried.

  • Sarah liked James.

  • My mother and I waited for my father.

4. COMPOUND SENTENCE

• Terdiri dari dua independent clause yang digabung dengan coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So).

• Contoh:

  • He sang a song, and she danced.

    • IC1: He sang a song.

    • IC2: She danced.

    • Conjunction: and

5. COMPLEX SENTENCE

• Terdiri dari satu main clause dan satu atau lebih dependent clause.

• Penulisan:

  • Jika dependent clause di depan → gunakan koma.

  • Jika di belakang → tidak perlu koma.

• Contoh:

  • Although I broke my arm, I still cheered for my team.

  • Rugby is a sport that I have played only once.

  • My grandfather, who fought in World War II, wrote a book.

6. COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE

• Gabungan dari compound dan complex sentence:

  • Dua atau lebih independent clause

  • Setidaknya satu dependent clause

• Contoh:

  • Though Jack prefers comedy films, he rented a thriller, and he enjoyed it.

  • Although he was exhausted, Dominic cooked dinner for his mother, and after dinner, he cleaned the kitchen.
